With support for nearly 190 archive file types, PeaZip is surely one of the most widely used free archive extractor and creator. This open-source development can open nearly any known archive file format, and can compress any file into a 7Z, ARC, BZ2, GZ, PAQ, PEA, SFX, TAR, UPX, WIM, XZ, or ZIP archive quickly and without exhausting your system’s resources. Besides, the app’s native format, PEA, offers an excellent compression ratio.
Undoubtedly, it is in the file extraction area where PeaZip really shines. No other – free or commercial – extraction tool is capable of recognizing, opening, and extracting as many different formats as this app does. All popular and well-known archive types are on the list (ZIP, RAR, ISO, 7Z, etc.), and the program’s prediction abilities make it capable of extracting file types not listed yet. Besides, it is one of the fastest extractors available. When it comes to putting files into a new archive, however, PeaZip still struggles a bit in terms of compression speed. Though slightly improving with each version, this otherwise excellent tool is far from the top 10 when it comes to archiving speed. Things change when it comes to the number of compression formats supported. Thus, except for RAR – which remains off-limits for any free or open source development – PeaZip supports a good number of archive formats that include all the most common ones. more
